FREE THE MIAMI FIVE
Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, René González
Vigil to break the silence and mark the 13th year of their unjust imprisonment
1.30 pm, Saturday 10th September
Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester
Five Cubans jailed on ‘conspiracy’ charges in 1998 by the United States courts. Their ‘crime’: gathering information on right wing groups planning terror attacks on Cuba from Florida.
13 years on they are still in jail, fighting for justice, their families denied visits.
Three of them won slightly reduced sentences in 2009, but Gerardo Hernández spent 13 days in solitary confinement in July 2010. He is currently requesting a new trial pointing to how the US government paid journalists to prejudice his case.
Their unjust treatment: a mark of the U.S. hostility to Cuba since its 1959 revolution. Amnesty International, the UN Human Rights Commission, the TUC, and 11 Nobel prize winners are amongst those who have protested about the five’s treatment.
Organised by the Manchester Cuba Solidarity Campaign
