15,000 protesters and strikers shut down the Port of Oakland on November 2nd. America's 5th largest port was closed when longshore workers refused to cross the 15,000 strong picket line. A Guardian article quotes an Occupy Oakland activist who said:
"We estimate up to 30,000 people passed through Occupy Oakland at some point today, and we were successful in shutting down the port."
Occupy Oakland called a general strike a week after Iraq war veteran Scott Olsen was hospitalised by a police projectile. Students, teachers and public sector workers took the day off to join the strike. One of the chants was "Shut down B of A" (Bank of America) More details here.
